The Assassination Attempt

What a horrible day for America. Sincere prayers for former President Trump, for those injured or killed, and for all those terrorized by this senseless shooting.

I have condemned every mass shooting, and I urge everyone to do the same with this one.

Political violence is never the answer in a country run through democratic process. I am deeply sensitive to —and have written many times about— the dangers to public officials and their families in this very partisan environment.

It does not matter how frustrated anyone is on any side any political debate: resorting to violence is not an appropriate political solution in our country.

A shooting is the very antithesis of what is needed in our country now, and is corrosive to our electoral process and the tenuous fabric of our civil society.

I urge us all to understand the truly fraught and dangerous nature of this moment, for everyone to take a step back, and for us all to seek ways to settle our deep differences through our system of laws and elections.
