Columbus Discovery:

An artist, musician, writer, cultural figure I stumble on as if I’m the first person to ever know about them.

Like Columbus, I’m usually thrilled to have “discovered” this new and creative talent. Like Columbus, I usually later realize that many of these people have been known for years –thank you very much– and are only “new” to me.

Given how many times this has happened, I no longer assume anything, and simply generically calls these moments “Columbus Discoveries,” confessing ahead of time that, while they are new to me, I might just be the last clueless person to learn about them.
